Bride and groom winter wedding portraits at Pleasantdale Chateau

Pleasantdale Chateau | West Orange, NJ

Pleasantdale Chateau is one of my favorite wedding venues in New Jersey. Tucked away in West Orange, the historic estate feels surprisingly removed from everything around it, with European-inspired architecture, winding paths, courtyards, and so many different spaces to photograph throughout a wedding day.

Valerie and Grant’s winter Pleasantdale Chateau wedding gave us an especially beautiful version of the property. Fresh snow from earlier in the week still covered parts of the grounds, while their ceremony and reception took place inside the estate. It gave us the opportunity to use both the historic interiors and the winter landscape throughout the day.

Winter Wedding Portraits at Pleasantdale Chateau

One of the things I love most about photographing weddings at Pleasantdale Chateau is the amount of variety within the property itself. Even during the winter, there are so many options without needing to leave the estate.

We used the glass-enclosed conservatory for some of Valerie and Grant’s portraits, surrounded by greenery and natural light while staying out of the cold. The historic interiors gave us completely different options throughout the rest of the mansion, with dark woodwork, architectural details, and plenty of character.

And of course, we had to take advantage of the snow outside! The grounds have such a different feeling in the winter, and the remaining snow made the estate feel especially beautiful for portraits.

An Indoor Winter Ceremony

Valerie and Grant, college sweethearts from Vanderbilt University, exchanged vows in an intimate indoor ceremony surrounded by family and friends. Candlelight and neutral florals filled the room, creating a warm contrast to the winter landscape outside.

For a winter wedding, having so many beautiful indoor spaces to work with is a huge advantage. The ceremony, portraits, cocktail hour, and reception can all take place within completely different areas of the estate without relying on the weather cooperating.

A Classic Estate Reception

After the ceremony, guests moved through the estate for cocktail hour before heading into the Grand Ballroom for the reception. The room has so much character on its own, with historic woodwork, chandeliers, and architectural details throughout.

Valerie and Grant kept their reception design classic with neutral florals and candlelight complementing the existing character of the space. They shared their first dance beneath the chandelier before the evening moved into toasts and a full dance floor.

One of the things that stayed with me after photographing this wedding was just how much there is to work with at Pleasantdale Chateau. The conservatory feels completely different from the historic interiors, which feel completely different again from the grounds and ballroom. Even in January, we never felt limited by the season.

It’s exactly the kind of estate I love photographing, and one I’m always excited for an opportunity to return to.
