This page is your guide to Montclair State graduation photography: when to schedule, where to photograph, and how to approach it in a way that feels polished and intentional.
Graduation season at Montclair State University moves quickly.
It’s meeting up for your last club meeting in the student center. It’s seeing (or participating!) in your last performance at Kasser. It’s walking the CarParc stairs one. last. time. It’s realizing campus won’t feel like this again.
Although commencement takes place off campus on May 11-12 in 2026, graduation photos happen here on the grounds where it all actually unfolded.
The weeks leading up to commencement are when the campus feels most alive. Seniors are finishing classes, celebrating with friends, and starting to say their goodbyes. Most of my Montclair seniors schedule their graduation session in April or early May, while campus still feels like home.
I’m a Montclair State alum and former commencement staff member. I understand how this season unfolds. I know how campus traffic changes in the spring. I know which areas become crowded. And I know where the evening light falls best.
If you’re looking for a Montclair State graduation photographer who knows this campus firsthand, you’re in the right place.
Montclair graduation sessions take place in April and early May, ahead of commencement week.
April and early May are ideal for a few reasons:
By the time commencement week arrives, seniors are traveling, families are visiting, and schedules are full. Photographing earlier allows the experience to feel calm and joyful.
Evening golden hour during this window offers the strongest light and the most flexibility. Most seniors book several weeks in advance to secure their preferred date before commencement approaches.
Montclair’s beautiful campus offers a mix of classic academic architecture and open green space.
My favorite portrait locations include:
Because I’ve worked commencement season, I also understand how foot traffic builds in the spring. That allows us to move efficiently and avoid crowded pockets of campus.
The goal isn’t to rush from spot to spot. It’s to use the campus in a way that feels reflective of your time there.
Nearly every Montclair senior chooses something white, and for good reason. Montclair’s red pairs beautifully with classic neutrals. A white dress photographs beautifully against the dark cap and gown. It feels clean and timeless. Structured silhouettes and minimal prints and patterns tend to photograph best.
For friends booking together, bringing along some champagne or confetti can add a fun, celebratory moment!
Olivia and Julie scheduled their session in late April, just before finals wrapped.
We began on campus before heading to a local bar in downtown Montclair for a second location. We started with classic portraits, then moved into cap and gown photos, and ended on a celebratory note with a champagne pop and confetti, before heading downtown to a local bar.
The result was a session that honored their time at Montclair while also incorporating a bit of personality and documenting their friendship along the way.

My Montclair graduation photography sessions are typically scheduled in April and early May, ahead of the May 11-12 commencement dates.
The booking process is simple. Once you inquire, I’ll send over collection details and available dates. After your contract is signed and payment is received, your session date is officially reserved.
Most seniors reach out several months in advance to secure an evening golden hour time slot before commencement approaches. As the semester winds down, availability becomes more limited.
If you’d like to reserve your date, you can inquire here, and I’ll guide you through the next steps.
Montclair was a major part of your story, and it’s a chapter worth documenting thoughtfully.
